Keep Heybourne Crescent and Clayton Field Access Only
The link between Heybourne Crescent and Clayton Field has been
cut off for nearly a year due to the building works at Plot
A.
Since the closure, through traffic has decreased significantly,
making the area safer for residents, and preventing the use of
these roads as a cut through between Lanacre Avenue and Grahame
Park Way. Anti-social use of mopeds and quad bikes has also
reduced.
Before the closure, residents raised concerns around several near misses of cars nearly hitting pedestrians, and of the fact Clayton Field is used as a route to several local schools, despite having no pavements.
We fear that if the link is reopened, as it is scheduled to be at the end of July 2022, the issues of speeding traffic and danger to pedestrians will recommence. As Douglas Bader Park is prepared for demolition, this will reduce safe routes to The Orion Primary school for many families in the area, forcing them to use the unsafe Clayton Field.
We, the undersigned, ask that the link is not re-opened and the road becomes access-only, either through erection of bollards or implementation of an ANPR system. This could be rolled out across the area as the new road linking Great Field to the rest of the regeneration area is built.
If nothing is done to significantly reduce traffic, it will only
be a matter of time before a fatality occurs. The danger posed by
motorists discourages the use of sustainable travel such as walking
and cycling, and increases pollution. To prioritise access for
motorists is in direct conflict with the council’s
sustainability objects and their declaration of a climate
emergency.
