Pedestrian Crossing Oakleigh Road South

We the undersigned petition the council to Install a pedestrian crossing in the immediate vicinity of New Southgate Recreation Ground and the railway underpass, to allow safe crossing of the road between the two.

Oakleigh Road South is an extremely busy and fast-moving road, with few traffic calming measures in place. The speed limits are frequently ignored and a number of accidents have occurred as a result.

Families with children attending nurseries, schools and parks in the area have to cross this road in order to reach their destinations and the opportunities for crossing safely are far apart. The particular area that is lacking a pedestrian crossing has poor visibility up and down the stretch of the road and it can take some time to cross safely between vehicles. This is further compounded by the many lorries coming in and out of the council facility opposite New Southgate Recreation Ground.

A pedestrian crossing between the railway underpass that connects Oakleigh Road South with Beaconsfield Road (where Bright Horizons Nursery and Bethune Park are located and Holly Park and St John’s primary schools are just a short walk further on) and New Southgate Recreation Ground and its surrounding streets, would give residents, particularly children, a much-needed safe place to cross. This in turn will encourage more families to walk or cycle and help to ease the amount of traffic on the roads.
