A directly-elected mayor for Barnet

We the undersigned petition the council to establish a directly-elected mayor to replace the current 'committee' system of governance in the borough of Barnet. Directly-elected mayors are accountable, they can galvanise action and take responsibility for the day-to-day running of local services.

Many councils have a civic mayor or chairman of the council. They carry out ceremonial duties and chair meetings, but CAN'T make decisions about council business.

Some councils have an elected mayor. They’re responsible for the day-to-day running of local services.

A directly-elected executive mayor would have wide decision-making powers. The mayor appoints a cabinet made up of other councillors, who may also have decision-making powers. The council would then require at least one 'overview & scrutiny' committee. Source: Local Government Assoc. 'Rethinking Governance', January 2014.
