Petition for a new skate park - Victoria Recreation Ground

We the undersigned believe that Barnet Council should include a skate park as part of the plans for the new developments in Victoria Recreation Ground, New Barnet.

There are many young skateboard enthusiasts who live nearby who do not have a skate park within easy reach. They currently have to travel to Friary park, or they can be seen navigating the uneven pavements of Barnet, or worse, using the middle of the road to practise. Young children are well catered for in the local area and a growing number of adult gyms are appearing, but our teenagers, who so desperately need to be encouraged to leave the sedentary activity of games consoles to take exercise and socialise, would benefit from a nearby skate park.

According to The Skate Parks Project other areas seem to be well supplied with skate parks, for example, the Northamptonshire area (with a population of 733,000) has a total of 27 skate parks and seems to include them as a matter of course in their recreation parks. Contrast this with Barnet (with a population of 386,000) where there are only 3 skate parks in the entire borough. To match this per capita, Barnet would need an additional 10 skate parks.

Victoria Recreation Ground would seem the obvious choice for a new skate park given that the building work and redevelopment of the park is about to start and also given the projected increase in the local population due to the imminent building of new housing adjacent to and near to the park.

We believe there may be some additional Community Infrastructure Levy money coming as a result of the extra developments along Victoria Road. If there is any money to be found anywhere, please would you spend it on a skate park in Victoria Recreation Ground.
